Why this matters for parents of a special needs child
Financial planning for a child with special needs is genuinely different — and more complicated — than typical family financial planning. The stakes are higher because:
- Government benefits have strict asset limits. Programs like SSI and Medicaid can be lost if money is saved or gifted the "normal" way (e.g., in the child's own name). A parent who doesn't know this could unintentionally disqualify their child from essential lifelong support.
- The planning window is time-sensitive. Certain legal decisions — like guardianship — need to be addressed before the child turns 18, when parents automatically lose the legal authority they had while the child was a minor.
- The plan has to outlive the parents. Unlike typical retirement planning, this involves answering "what happens to my child when I'm no longer here to advocate for them?" — which most generic financial advisors aren't trained to address.
Darryl brings over 23 years of experience helping people to navigate toward achieving life goals. Darryl specializes working with parents of a disabled child, helping them focus on their own retirement while incorporating the complexities of special needs financial planning.Â
