The moment my coaching business changed forever...

I started coaching in 2005 because I loved the power of coaching and personal transformation. It all started in September 1994 when I found myself financially devastated. I graduated from college that spring and I was a stockbroker in Chicago. It was tough, really tough and I wasn't making any money but I had some serious bills. So I had more month left at the end of my money - this really sucked. I needed a coach but at that time didn't know they even existed. However, I was guided to go to Borders Bookstore and I found myself in the "self help" area. Don't know why but I was. With the two pennies I had to rub together, I purchased a Tony Robbins audio tape cassette "Power Talk" and I was hooked from there. I had read multiple self-help books, listened to tapes and attended Tony Robbins seminar "Unleash The Power Within". Okay now back to 2005, I made the decision based more off how I felt “the why” versus how the heck I was going to do it “the how”. I didn’t have a clear plan on how I was going to build a coaching business. At the time, I thought it was such a unique profession that it would be simple to get clients. I thought I would just have to tell people I was a coach and I would have clients.


I jumped in and began attending webinars and listening to all the masters explain how I needed to build an email list. I listened, often overwhelmed, and very unsure about making the investment into their program. As time passed, I continued to listen and attend more marketing webinars. I implemented much of what I learned but many times I couldn’t buy the program (I didn’t have the money).


I found myself lost and very frustrated and overwhelmed. The marketers had a great pitch but over time I started to realize that something was missing. The missing piece was the list (email list). All these marketing programs, that I was pitched, none of them really showed you how to build an email list. They would speak to it as if you had one. Well I didn’t!!! This was the missing piece. However it wasn’t the only one. I came into the coaching business as a Life Coach. I didn’t have a clue who I was as a coach. Here comes the next problem. Most of the marketing programs also overlooked the value of having a clear market (target market) and knowing your specialty (niche). Probably because they wanted me to feel that wasn’t necessary, but buy the marketing program anyway.

  • Joint venture online “Success 2012”
  • Teleseminars
  • Developed digital products
  • Landing pages (provide offer to get name and email)
  • Teleseminar replays and autopilots
  • Social media post
  • Joined Facebook and LinkedIn groups
  • Started my own Facebook groups
  • Twitter (I had no clue on how to use it to grow my list)
  • Spam (Not proud of it...mostly in social media DM on Twitter and Messenger)
  • Video marketing
  • Youtube Channel
  • Changed my specialty
  • Speaking engagements
  • Authored a book
  • Tony Robbins coach for 6.5 years

As you can see I was all over the place but working extremely hard! I wish I could say results would follow but they didn't, at least not what I expected. This process was painful and looking back I had every reason to through the town in but I didn't. I'm so grateful that I didn't. Over that time span, I learned about target marketing and found myself really struggling to pick one and own it. I had the effort but would eventually drift away from it. The pain and frustration over years became the norm. I often thought, "Why am I not getting the results I want?!"

And then it changed! It hit me right between the eyes. If you want to have a successful coaching business that's sustainable month after month and year after year it comes down to knowing your target market, niche and a systemized process to grow your audience. It's that simple! I spent so much time and effort building landing pages and marketing my webinars to the general masses. I was attempting to know everything. I was reading business books to spiritual books.

My coaching business changed when I decided to focus on coaches (target market) and helping them grow their audience (niche). This is what I've been doing for my own business for the last 12 years. I've done it all. I've learn that if you want to grow an audience you need to have a very specific marketing strategy. DON'T ATTEMPT TO DO EVERYTHING. This will tear you apart and keep you away from the success and your desired goals.

Any coach can reach any goal and it starts with knowing your target market and your niche!
